The first major awards show of awards season is tonight and avid film followers and enthusiasts worldwide will be tuning in to see the nominees and who wins what. I do quite like watching the Globes, they’re generally funny and more lighter than the behemoth that is the Oscars, also the very funny Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will be hosting again, which is a plus.
I haven’t really followed the awards buzz this season but the best TV or musical category is strong again this year, with Girls, Jane The Virgin, Orange Is The New Black, Silicon, Valley and Transparent, personally I’d go with Silicon Valley. Best TV drama is also a big one, out of The Good Wife, Game Of Thrones, Downton Abbey, The Affair, House of Cards – Thrones wins for me.
Also the big awards in best screenplay (Gone Girl for me), best director (David Fincher) and best motion picture (Foxcatcher) for me and not forgetting the best actor, tough to choose between Gylenhaal in Nightcrawler, Carell in Foxcatcher, my two favourites from those nominations. And best actress in a drama as well as best actor, best actress in a comedy or musical. The Globes definition of comedies is a bit weird with a film like Birdman being in the best comedy/musical section, it is a black comedy but also very much so a drama. Maybe they just couldn’t class Birdman as an out and out drama.
The best picture (drama) category is hotly contested this year, with Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Selma, The Imitation Game, The Theory Of Everything, it should be interesting seeing who gets the globe in the end.
Boyhood, The Theory Of Everything and Foxcatcher may collect a few awards between them but it’d be nice to see Gone Girl pick up some as well, including best original score as well possibly, with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross doing the score for that. Anyway it should be a good awards show and hopefully and good to watch as it usually is.
