The Man From U.N.C.L.E is a snazy looking cold war era spy drama from Guy Ritchie, based on the American TV series of the same name, the film is set for July release in the US and August in the UK. And we have a more clear look at the film with this trailer. While it’s not an outright parody, it has comedic elements to it and it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.
Starring Alicia Wikander, Henry Cavill as CIA agent and Armie Hammer working with the KGB on opposing sides in 1963 during the cold, having to work together to stop a nuclear threat and of course dealing with the irony and humour in a Russian and American agent having to work together in the cold war. I got a very Pirates of the Carribean feel from the trailer as far as tone goes, though it almost feels like a buddy dram in the style of The Lone Ranger, pitting the straight man (Armie Hammer) against the wise cracking, cocky character (Henry Cavill), though both of them come across as expert, professional spies. Spies that do sort of bumble their way through their tasks as it appears, I think that Guy Ritchie is a great choice to direct this due to how he balances drama and humour so well and his own personal style of filmmaking really does shine through in the trailer.
I’m actually looking forward to the film a fair amount and if it’s half as good as Kingsman was, then we have our 2nd best spy film of the year and I haven’t seen Spy yet but I hear good things.
