Suicide Squad trailer #1

“I want to assemble a task force of the most dangerous people on the planet, who I think can do some good”.

So a little movie called Suicide Squad has some footage out online now and it’s looking pretty good, first off we see Viola Davis’ character Amanda Waller talking to another character – a military general by the looks of it, about the formation of the squad itself and its’ members. Detailing how they’re bad, dangerous people and ultimately a group of loose ends that Argus (the organization that Waller works with to make the team) can do away with and distance themselves from, as they’re basically a group of mercenaries and killers and people will always think they’re bad.

David Ayer may just have been one of the best directors to take the film on as he’s great at telling character stories and great with drama and combining his style of filmmaking with this type of comic book story is a pretty intriguing mix.

We see all of the team in action, a very cool shot of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) inside a cage doing some acrobatics because she’s Harley Quinn, as well as El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and Deadshot (Will Smith) out of his outfit initially and doing some physical training and Enchantress (Cara Delevigne) also. I want to talk about Deadshots’ costume for a second because it looks pretty great, I’m loving the design with the white mask covering the head, it’s a different look and Margot Robbie as Harley of course is a big thing, she looks like she fits right into the role with coloured pigtails, a love heart and “Kitten” written on her face, she also looks great in her costume.

Some of my initial doubts over some of the squad are lowered a bit with seeing footage of the characters in action and they do all look better together, there’s a gritty, grimy look to a few of them especially in Boomerang (Jai Courtney), El Diablo and Enchantress and I can totally see how they’re a bunch of people thrown together, not necessarily liking each other and not being heroes either. While characters like Harley Quinn fit the gritty aesthetic the film is going for, Margot’s got smudged make up and looks a bit unhinged herself.

The trailer’s painting an interesting picture here, the music makes it feel like an almost heartfelt story and in a sense the story of the suicide squad is quite a tragic one, we’ll be seeing some of Deadshots’ backstory as well (we see a scene with him presumably with his kid), and we see a quick shot of Rick Flag and what seems be his wife or girlfriend. I also like how the film just looks a bit crazy, shootouts, wacky costumes, the set pieces in the film already look good and that’s a good visual nod to the elaborate, crazy missions that the squad gets assigned to in the comics.

And Jared Leto as the Joker everyone, I remember posting my reaction to his Suicide Squad look that got a very mixed reception, judging Leto simply on how he looked as the character is only half the character and even with how he does look with shirtless, slicked back hair, metal teeth and all, he looks pretty terrifying. From the snippet we get of him at the end, he looks every bit a deranged, wild Joker and I’m looking forward to his portrayal, he’s also a great actor so I was never really in doubt but yeah the trailer does a good enough job and while not everyone will be satisfied, even with Leto as the Joker, I think it’s looking good.

Suicide Squad premieres in August 2016.

Talking points

. How does the Joker fit into the story? Will he be the squads target?

. Batman’s in the film, but why?

. What does the squad do that’s so bad that the military has to get involved, or are they even the militaries target?
