3 video games that could just work as films

In light of some recent updates on the upcoming Assassins Creefilm and the reception to the now panned Hitman Agent 47, the latest film adaptation of the Hitman games, it came to mind that there are some great games out there with awesome stories that could make for some pretty good films.

Splinter Cell

A stealth action game, just think of Mission Impossible as a game series but with more emphasis on stealth and technology as the main action hero of the film Sam Fisher uses an array of gadgets and gizmos to undertake his missions and do so in the shadows – or not if you prefer to play all guns blazing. I think the stealthy approach to things could make for a great film idea however as Splinter Cell can set itself apart from spy films with its own more technological, tactical approach to things. The issue here is making a compelling and non cliché story that feels different enough to stand out.

So maybe a risky, dangerous mission for veteran agent Sam Fisher goes wrong and further complications make him question the very organization he works for, forcing Sam to try and survive without his resources or gadgets (sounds a bit like the plot for Mission Impossible, I know) just throwing random ideas out there. But overall I think Splinter Cell could really make a decent film if done well.

Mass Effect

One of the best sci-fi games of all time, the Mass Effect games are a deeply engaging and entertaining space adventure, part space opera, part action adventure, the story could conceivably translate well from each of the 3 existing games with a tonne of aliens, futuristic technology and potential for some great spectacle, with some grounded human characters, concept of government and politics.

Mass Effect is great because of how grounded it feels, despite being over 100 years in the future and with a great set of characters, great ideas about future technology and rich lore, so there’s some great material here for storytelling if a straight game to film adaptation is the plan, but an original idea based on the games world could also work. And if helmed by a sci-fi maverick like say, Ridley Scott… who knows, it could end up being good.  A film is apparently in ‘the works’ and might well get made but I last heard about that a while ago, so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

Now this is I think could make a brilliant post apocalyptic film, clearly tongue in cheek and light in tone, if the humour translates from the game with strong writing, we could get a pretty hilarious film as the games have a quirky, humorous tone to them which stands in stark contrast with the now devastated landscapes that the stories take place in. And that’s part of what’s great about the games, they’re unashamedly crude and well aware of the ridiculous characters, scenarios and situations they present, doing them in a fun way. The Fallout games are rich in lore and populated with a tonne of stand out characters but deciding what portion of the Fallout overall story to adapt would be the tricky thing here.

Focusing on a traveler making his way in the post apocalypse as he encounters different characters, from robots to mutants to random towns and individuals to emphasize how transformed and weird the world (specifically North America) now is post nuclear fallout. Or alternatively, focus on the world as it was in the lead up to nuclear war and how things changed, there are a few choices to go with and the Fallout games have a lot of story that could be adapted. Though I’m specifically thinking of the vibe of Zombieland but with Fallouts post apocalyptic setting.

Well those are just 3 choices out of a wealth of great video games out there with some great stories and contained worlds, agree, disagree or have your own top choices? Feel free to let me know.

    • Thanks, I’d really push for Splinter Cell most as I think it could be a good spy thriller.

There are some games out there with great stories that could work as films imo, Uncharted, The Last of Us to name a few.

  1. Great list, I would add Halo to it, would make an awesome film if done right. Heavily agree with Mass Effect, I love those games, they could make a trilogy to rival Star Wars and Lord of the Rings if they were done right.

    • Thanks and yeah that’s a great choice and a film has been on the cards for a while apparently. And if you’ve seen the Until Dawn mini-series, it shows Halo can work as live action.

Mass Effect could just be so cool on the big screen, needs some great direction but the world, cool characters and great story is there already.
