2 Fast 2 Furious is the 2nd entry in the Furious franchise and the follow up to The Fast And The Furious, set around cop Brian O’Conner working in LA with his childhood friend Roman as they work towards taking down a Miami drug exporter, the film stars Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Eva Mendes, Devon Aoki and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges.
2 Fast takes the franchise in an interesting direction, melding more drama and elements of a crime action thriller as Brian O’Conner is tasked by the police to work with his friend, Roman, though Dominic Toretto isn’t present this time around, some new character introductions are great with Tej (Chris Bridges/Ludacris) and Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes). And while the characters are mostly fun to watch, you do get some one dimensional ones with some cheesy lines. The tension is still high and the street racing again makes its return, featuring at points in the film but not really important to the plot, there are some car chase sequences though which are done well and take place on motorways and open road, upping the stakes with random cars and drivers also becoming involved. The tension is also high because of the inherent crime element to the plot, 2 Fast 2 Furious feels like more of an action film that also happens to involve cars, torture, shoot outs and the like.
And speaking of tense scenes, there’s a notable chase sequence involving two trailers, the plot works well to use the street racing as part of the action and it makes for some thrilling scenes and Carter Veron (Cole Hauser) is a decent villain, albeit a bit of a cardboard cut out one with his evil motives and untrustworthy demeanour. The absence of characters like Dom and Letty makes for a pretty random change in dynamic and after watching The Fast and The Furious you may be left wondering why Vin Diesel wasn’t in the film (though probably due to busy filming schedules for him) and what things would have been like with him present, though Roman does make up for it, with Tyrese Gibsons’ ever present enthusiasm, energy and funny lines.
The plot is fun and definitely gets better as it goes on, with multiple things going on with Brian now being on the wrong side of the law but working to clear his name, Brian and Roman working to try and take down Carter while they work out their own relationship and the cops constantly coming into play and opposing both sides of the drug plot. 2 Fast 2 Furious is a fun film, a tad shallow with its characters in elements but still an engaging watch with some great sequences, cool cars and a tight plot, an interesting expansion on the world that The Fast and The Furious sets up.
. Good use of racing, some tense sequences
. Engaging plot, though a bit formulaic
. Some one dimensional and or underused characters
